Darlington Raceway the Track Too Tough to Tame, the Lady in Black, are all nicknames for this storied track. Darlington is also known as the granddaddy of stockcar racing. Darlington Raceway's unique egg-shaped design was not in the original plans that Harold Brasington drew up. Brasington wanted to create a true 1.25 mile oval but the minnow pond that is adjacent to turns 3 & 4 made that design impossible. The track was narrowed to accommodate the pond and has created some of the best racing that NASCAR has ever had. The track's shape makes it almost impossible for crews to set up cars that handle effectively at both ends of the track.
